DJ Tonka, real name Thomas-René Gerlach, is a leading figure in Germany’s disco house scene. After making a name for himself alongside classmate Ian Pooley, Tonka has become a producer renowned for his distinctive house tracks, peppered with oldschool breakbeats and influences from early Italian disco. His sets are legendary, especially those in his hometown of Mainz. Over time, he decided to drop the ‘DJ’ from his alias and stick with ‘Tonka’ for his most recent productions.
Tonka has had a significant impact on electronic music, with hits such as « She Knows You » in 1998 and « Don’t Be Afraid » in 2000, among others. In addition to his own productions, he has also done a significant number of remixes for other artists. His discography includes a wide range of creations, spanning several decades, and reflecting his evolution as an artist and his lasting influence on the house genre. He is also known by various pseudonyms, including Chip Tunes and The Refresha, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to various aspects of music production.
